systemd ships `units/serial-getty@.service.m4` with the `--keep-baud`
option.
We override that unit, and didn't add the `--keep-baud` option. (We have
it in our other getty options there).
Having `--keep-baud` in `serial-getty@` makes a lot of sense - the
console keeps working if it's initialized with a less standard baud
rate, such as the [Helios64](https://wiki.kobol.io/helios64/intro/).
This corresponds to agetty's --login-options argument.
With this change, I can set
services.getty.autologinUser = "qyliss";
services.getty.loginOptions = "-- \\u";
and have my username prefilled, but with my password still
required (unlike the normal autologinUser behaviour).
It's been 8.5 years since NixOS used mingetty, but the option was
never renamed (despite the file definining the module being renamed in
9f5051b76c ("Rename mingetty module to agetty")).
I've chosen to rename it to services.getty here, rather than
services.agetty, because getty is implemantation-neutral and also the
name of the unit that is generated.
The getty@.service unit already has an ExecStart so we cannot simply set a new
one in order to override it or we will get this error:
systemd[1]: getty@tty1.service: Service has more than one ExecStart= setting, which is only allowed for Type=oneshot services. Refusing.
Instead "reset" ExecStart by setting it to empty which is the systemd way of
doing it.
Setting nixosVersion to something custom is useful for meaningful GRUB
menus and /nix/store paths, but actuallly changing it rebulids the
whole system path (because of `nixos-version` script and manual
pages). Also, changing it is not a particularly good idea because you
can then be differentitated from other NixOS users by a lot of
programs that read /etc/os-release.
This patch introduces an alternative option that does all you want
from nixosVersion, but rebuilds only the very top system level and
/etc while using your label in the names of system /nix/store paths,
GRUB and other boot loaders' menus, getty greetings and so on.
This option causes the specified user to be automatically logged in at
the virtual console.
While at it, refactor and make a helper function for building the getty
command line.
If you define a unit, and either systemd or a package in
systemd.packages already provides that unit, then we now generate a
file /etc/systemd/system/<unit>.d/overrides.conf. This makes it
possible to use upstream units, while allowing them to be customised
from the NixOS configuration. For instance, the module nix-daemon.nix
now uses the units provided by the Nix package. And all unit
definitions that duplicated upstream systemd units are finally gone.
This makes the baseUnit option unnecessary, so I've removed it.
Using pkgs.lib on the spine of module evaluation is problematic
because the pkgs argument depends on the result of module
evaluation. To prevent an infinite recursion, pkgs and some of the
modules are evaluated twice, which is inefficient. Using ‘with lib’
prevents this problem.
With kmscon, it is now possible to have a system without X that still
needs the mesa setup in /run/opengl-driver

This required some changes to systemd unit handling:
* Add an option to specify that a unit is just a symlink
* Allow specified units to overwrite systemd-provided ones
* Have gettys.target require autovt@1.service instead of getty@1.service
