pennae 3aebb4a2be nixos/*: normalize link format
make (almost) all links appear on only a single line, with no
unnecessary whitespace, using double quotes for attributes. this lets us
automatically convert them to markdown easily.

the few remaining links are extremely long link in a gnome module, we'll
come back to those at a later date.

pennae 9c8531c8a5 nixos/*: replace <replaceable>s with «thing»
we can't embed syntactic annotations of this kind in markdown code
blocks without yet another extension. replaceable is rare enough to make
this not much worth it, so we'll go with «thing» instead. the module
system already uses this format for its placeholder names in attrsOf
paths.

pennae 694d5b19d3 nixos/*: replace </para><para> with double linebreaks
our xslt already replaces double line breaks with a paragraph close and
reopen. not using explicit para tags lets nix-doc-munge convert more
descriptions losslessly.

only whitespace changes to generated documents, except for two
strongswan options gaining paragraph two breaks they arguably should've
had anyway.

pennae 2e751c0772 treewide: automatically md-convert option descriptions
the conversion procedure is simple:

 - find all things that look like options, ie calls to either `mkOption`
   or `lib.mkOption` that take an attrset. remember the attrset as the
   option
 - for all options, find a `description` attribute who's value is not a
   call to `mdDoc` or `lib.mdDoc`
 - textually convert the entire value of the attribute to MD with a few
   simple regexes (the set from mdize-module.sh)
 - if the change produced a change in the manual output, discard
 - if the change kept the manual unchanged, add some text to the
   description to make sure we've actually found an option. if the
   manual changes this time, keep the converted description

this procedure converts 80% of nixos options to markdown. around 2000
options remain to be inspected, but most of those fail the "does not
change the manual output check": currently the MD conversion process
does not faithfully convert docbook tags like <code> and <package>, so
any option using such tags will not be converted at all.

nixos/udev: compress all firmware if supported
This should be a significant disk space saving for most NixOS
installations. This method is a bit more complicated than doing it in
the postInstall for the firmware derivations, but this way it's
automatic, so each firmware package doesn't have to separately
implement its compression.

Currently, only xz compression is supported, but it's likely that
future versions of Linux will additionally support zstd, so I've
written the code in such a way that it would be very easy to implement
zstd compression for those kernels when they arrive, falling back to
xz for older (current) kernels.

I chose the highest possible level of compression (xz -9) because even
at this level, decompression time is negligible. Here's how long it took
to decompress every firmware file my laptop uses:

	i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin                  	2ms
	regulatory.db                             	4ms
	regulatory.db.p7s                         	3ms
	iwlwifi-7265D-29.ucode                    	62ms
	9d71-GOOGLE-EVEMAX-0-tplg.bin             	22ms
	intel/dsp_fw_kbl.bin                      	65ms
	dsp_lib_dsm_core_spt_release.bin          	6ms
	intel/ibt-hw-37.8.10-fw-22.50.19.14.f.bseq	7ms

And since booting NixOS is a parallel process, it's unlikely (but
difficult to measure) that the time to user interaction was held up at
all by most of these.

nixos/udev: systemd initrd improvements
First, add the builtin udev rules to /etc/udev/rules.d so they are used.
Then, add all networkd .link units to the initrd. This is done in the
old stage 1 as well so I assume this is needed even when networkd is not
used. I assume this is for things like changing the MAC address.

Also limit the number of udev/lib binaries that is put into the initrd
because the old initrd doesn't use all units either.

Support virtual Nintendo Switch Pro controllers in joycond
2021-10-07 13:54:30 +02:00
Jake Woods 1af6417b86 nixos/joycond: init
NixOS should be able to support the Nintendo Switch Pro controller for
steam and non-steam at the same time. Currently there are two mutually
exclusive ways to support the Pro Controller: Steam and `hid-nintendo`.

Unfortunately these don't work together, but there's a workaround in
newer versions of `joycond` (described [here](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamepad#Using_hid-nintendo_pro_controller_with_Steam_Games_(with_joycond))). To use this
workaround `hid-nintendo` and `joycond` need to be updated, and the
systemd and udev configuration needs to be made available in NixOS.

Profpatsch 6376458424 sane: Add support for the unfree Fujitsu ScanSnap drivers
This adds the scanner files already linked from the
`etc/sane.d/epjitsu.conf` file, which are extracted from the Windows
drivers and mirrored on GitHub.

Being a Japanese hardware vendor, Fujitsu’s software release &
licensing methods are horrifying, but their scanners are some of the
best, so we should definitly have discoverable support for them, which
this patch hopefully adds.

nixos/brltty: use upstream units
Upstream has been providing a very thoroughly designed set of systemd units,
udev and polkit rules. With these the brltty daemon is activated
asynchronously via udev, runs as a dedicated user with runtime and state
directories set up using systemd-tmpfiles.

This is much better than the current unit, which runs a single instance
as root and pulls in systemd-udev-settle to wait for the hardware.

nixos/tcsd: several improvements and fixes
- Actually run tcsd as tss/tss
- Install a udev rule to set /dev/tpm* permissions
- Remove systemd-udev-settle dependency, use dev-tpm0.device instead
- Use systemd-tmpfiles to set up the state directory
- Add documentation URI to tcsd.service

This module cannot be easily tested with a NixOS test due to the TPM
dependency. Technically, one could be emulated using swtpm[1], but this
is not packaged in Nixpkgs. If you computer has a real TPM you can do a
passthrough in Qemu, but this requires running the VM as root and of
course it's not determinstic:

    $ nix build -f nixos vm --arg configuration '
      {
        virtualisation.qemu.options = [
          "-tpmdev passthrough,id=tpm0,path=/dev/tpm0,cancel-path=/sys/class/tpm/tpm0/cancel"
          "-device tpm-tis,tpmdev=tpm0"
        ];
        users.users.root.hashedPassword = "";
        services.tcsd.enable = true;
      }'

After starting the VM, log in as root, you can check the service has
started with `systemctl status tcsd`.

nixos/thinkfan: rewrite for 1.2 update
Thinkfan underwent some major changes and the config file
is now based on YAML. This commit contains a number of changes:

- rewrite the module to output the new format;
- add a `settings` option, following RFC 0042[1];
- add fancy type-checking for the most critical options
- use upstream systemd units (which fix the resume issue)

There was some issues with the fallback to passive mode on 2.3, but on

to passive if necessary.
